Cataracts can be described as a cloudiness of the eye’s natural lens, which can eventually obstruct vision. Cataracts form between the front and back areas of the eye. Below are some of the most common questions about cataracts and treatment options for them.

Are cataracts found only in older people?

While nearly everyone above the age of 75 has at least some degree of cataracts, about half of the population will also have a cataract by age 65. In some rare cases, infants can have congenital cataracts, which can be inherited, or caused by the mother having German measles, chickenpox, or another infectious disease during pregnancy.

Should cataracts be immediately removed?

A cataract usually starts very small and practically unnoticeable but grows gradually larger and cloudier. Unless the cataract is obstructing your vision, a doctor will probably wait before removing it.

Is cataract surgery serious?

While all surgery involves some risk, cataract surgery is the most commonly performed type of surgery in the United States. Choosing a LASIK surgeon experienced with this type of surgery will reduce the risk of something going wrong.

How is a cataract removed?

The surgeon starts by making a small incision is made into the eye. He will then either remove the lens as is, or use a laser, ultrasound, or surgical solution to break it up and then remove it. The back membrane of the lens (called the posterior capsule) is left in place and a replacement lens (called an intraocular lens, or IOL) is inserted.

Occasionally, a doctor will remove both the lens and the membrane--called intracapsular extraction--to ensure that the membrane itself won't eventually grow cloudy and interfere with vision. When the membrane becomes cloudy, or if any bits of remaining natural lens become cloudy, this is called a secondary cataract.

How much does cataract surgery cost?

Cost will vary from one doctor to the next. It will also depend on eyewear prescribed and what type of artificial lens (intraocular lens) will be used as a replacement. Most health insurance plans will cover cataract surgery and IOLs, but not some of the premium artificial lenses available.

What are possible side effects of cataract surgery?

Very few patients have serious problems or complications, but pain, infection, swelling and bleeding are possible. Your surgeon may prescribe medications for these effects.
