South Texas Eye Institute - San Antonio CK® Surgery

Available at our ophthalmology office in San Antonio, Texas, NearVisionSM CK® surgery (conductive keratoplasty) is a significant advance in the field of refractive surgery. CK® surgery is ideal for people over the age of 40 who use reading glasses for tasks at near distances but typically use no glasses for distance vision. The treatment can be appropriate for presbyopic patients who also have a very small amount of farsightedness (hyperopia) or nearsightedness (myopia). CK® surgery is not intended for patients with a significant amount of myopia.

How NearVisionSM CK® surgery works

NearVisionSM CK® surgery changes the way the eye focuses at near distances by altering the curvature of the cornea. The CK® surgery procedure involves the release of controlled radio frequency (RF) waves that cause corneal tissues to contract, thus steepening the cornea. This precise modification to the cornea’s surface provides a reduction of presbyopia.

Our CK® surgery patients have their treatment in the office. Generally, only one eye is treated, the non-dominant eye as determined by office testing. The treatment time is brief and is considered painless. No patch is necessary after the procedure. Eye drops will be used for five to seven days. During the first 24 to 48 hours after CK® surgery, patients may experience a gritty or foreign body sensation, which is soothed by the eye drops provided.
