Dr. Lisa Martén
Dr. Lisa Martén is the medical director of the South Texas Eye Institute in San Antonio. Dr. Martén joined South Texas Eye Institute after finishing her Cornea and Refractive surgery fellowship at the Wang Vision Institute in Nashville, TN. Dr. Martén attended medical school at Tulane University, and residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center here in San Antonio. Dr. Martén grew up in San José, Costa Rica and came to the US in 1989. She is bilingual in English and Spanish.
Dr. Martén has written several articles on refractive surgery topics as well as contributing to a chapter in the new edition of Yanoff & Duker's Ophthalmology textbook.
Dr. Martén has an interest in several recently developed refractive surgery techniques, including All-laser Lasik, PRK, Implantable Contact Lenses, and Intacs for Keratoconus. She also performs corneal transplants, and is trained in IEK (Intralase Enabled Keratoplasty), which uses the femtosecond laser to create the corneal button. Another new procedure, DSEK, which removes the diseased part of the cornea only, is available at South Texas Eye Institute.
Dr. Andrew J. Cottingham, Jr.
A skilled LASIK surgeon, Dr. Cottingham is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases.
A graduate of Duke University, Dr. Andrew J. Cottingham received his medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center and his residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In addition, he has completed a one-year residency in preventative medicine with research in tropical disease at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and a fellowship in corneal-external disease and anterior segment surgery at the Bascom Palmer Institute.
Dr. Andrew J. Cottingham has published numerous academic articles. He is a member of a number of medical societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society, and the International Society of Keratorefractive Surgeons. He has been heavily involved in refractive surgery since 1981. Dr. Cottingham has been performing and teaching refractive surgery since 1981. His experience includes radial keratotomy (RK), myopic and hyperopic keratomileusis (MKM, HKM), epikeratoplasty, automated lamellar keratoplasty (ALK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and now laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Dr. Cottingham was the first surgeon to perform LASIK surgery in the city of San Antonio.
Dr. Andrew J. Cottingham is a board certified ophthalmologist and a corneal specialist. He studied corneal diseases during his residency, and in addition he has completed specialized fellowship training in corneal-external disease and corneal surgery. He also has completed additional specialized training in refractive surgery. This gives him extensive knowledge and skills when it comes to procedures such as corneal transplants, or refractive surgery for which he receives numerous referrals.
