LASIK Self-Test

You Have Questions, We Have Answers: Our Staff Answers Some Of Your Most Common FAQs

South Texas Eye Institute has been performing laser vision correction for many years, and we have heard it all, so don’t ever be afraid to ask questions. Let us provide a few answers to some of the universal questions we hear from our patients.

Does LASIK Hurt?

The most a patient feels with LASIK is a bit of discomfort after the surgery is performed. We tell our patients to go home and rest or nap for several hours. You may take some Tylenol or Advil to ease the scratchy feeling.

Patients normally have dry eyes after LASIK, so using moisture drops is recommended and will be explained as part of your post-operative care. When you wake up, and especially the next morning, you will feel much better and begin to experience the “wow” factor of LASIK.

How Much Downtime Will I Need?

There is little to no downtime after laser eye surgery. It is one of the reasons LASIK has become the refractive eye surgery of choice. There is only topical anesthesia and the only downtime is the actual day of surgery.

Many, if not most patients can drive themselves to their first appointment the day after surgery. There will be some restrictions the first few weeks, like avoiding swimming and hot tubs, but you can return to work within a day or two.

Healing takes place over the next few weeks with most patients fully healed within three months. Be aware that during that time you may have some fluctuation in your vision. It is important to adhere to all the post-operative instructions and return for your prescribed follow-up visits so we can monitor your healing progress.

So the answer: little to no vacation days needed with LASIK. Save them for the beach!

Is LASIK Safe?

This is probably one of our most frequently asked questions.

When LASIK is performed on qualified patients by an experienced refractive surgeon, then you can expect an extremely safe procedure with amazing visual results. There have been millions of LASIK patients treated over the last several decades with high satisfaction rates and with less than 1 per cent of patients experiencing a vision-reducing complication.

Today, astronauts, the U.S. military and first responders all are approved for LASIK to punctuate its safe results.

The qualified patients are those who have undergone a thorough LASIK evaluation. South Texas Eye Institute will provide that thorough exam along with your opportunity to have a one-on-one personal consult with our refractive surgeons.

Our surgeons will review your tests, provide surgical options, and recommend which procedure is the right one for you. All your additional questions will be answered so you can be confident in your decision.
