For the people that have occasional dry eye symptoms, the relief may be as simple as occasional supplemental teardrops. There are variety of types and kinds. For persons with more moderate symptoms or symptoms that are present most of the time, we often use tiny inert silicone plugs known as lacrimal plugs and this very simply reduces the egress or outflow of tears such that you get more relief from what tears that you do have. For patients who suffer the more severe symptoms, the constant burning and irritation that is so typical for the dry eye syndrome patient, we now have medications, stimulative medications that actually stimulate greater tear film production and improve the qualities of tears. These are prescription medications for the most part and must be taken daily and do their work over time. Additionally and more recently, we have determined that supplementation with what are often common food products such as flaxseed oil or anything with a lot of omega-3 fatty acids do help the more severe symptoms in frank dry eye syndrome. These supplements do their work over time, but are something that everyone can get improvement with.
