Hi, I am Dr. Jimmy Eggers. You are at South Texas Eye Institute and we the surgeons at South Texas Eye Institute would like to introduce ourselves and tell you a little bit about our professional training, our interest within medicine and a little bit about our interest outside of medicine. I would first like to tell you little bit about Dr Andrew Cottingham.
Dr. Andrew Cottingham founded the South Texas Eye Institute 20 years ago in 1987, here in this very same location. This was following a 20-year military career in United States Army. Dr. Cottingham received all his ophthalmology training in the military system including his residency at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC followed by a period of even more specialized fellowship training in medical and surgical diseases of the cornea at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. It was during his military career that Dr. Cottingham notably founded the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank and now the single largest provider of corneal transplant tissue in United States. Dr. Cottingham continues to be at the forefront with his interest in the cornea here in San Antonio for example Dr. Cottingham was the first person in San Antonio to perform LASIK also he has been at the forefront of refining corneal transplantation techniques including very recent new technique called DSAEK which involves removing only the diseased portion of the cornea and replacing it with new tissue and this results in a much reduced recovery time. Dr. Cottingham, although he was born and raised in London North Carolina all his adult life he has enjoyed ocean sailing and presently keeps to sail boat in Port Aransas, Texas.
