5 Ways to Know You Have Cataracts

Did you know that cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the world? This common eye condition affects everyone as they grow older. Most people don’t even realize they have cataracts since there are no symptoms when they first develop. While cataract patients are at risk of vision loss and blindness, the majority of people won’t experience symptoms until their cataracts have caused significant vision loss.

What Is a Cataract?

Put simply, a cataract is clouding that develops on the eye’s lens. The lens is located behind the pupil and iris. When a patient has cataracts, light that would normally come through the lens is blocked. This leads to loss of vision, haziness, and blurred vision. Many of our San Antonio patients who have received cataract surgery were able to notice an improvement in their vision depth, color, and clarity. Read on to learn about five signs you may be developing cataracts.

1. Cloudy Vision

Cloudy vision is the first sign of cataract development — it may seem as though you’re looking through a piece of frosted glass. However, because cataract symptoms develop slowly over time, you may not notice cloudy vision until your cataracts have progressed.

2. Changes in Vision

A very common sign of cataracts is sudden changes to your vision. If you can no longer see the things you used to be able to, and/or are experiencing distorted vision, it’s time to make an appointment with your eye doctor to discuss cataract surgery at our San Antonio location.

3. Poor Night Vision

If you have difficulty driving at night due to halos forming around the lights of oncoming cars, you may be dealing with cataracts.

4. Sensitivity to Light

Sensitivity to light is another common symptom of cataracts and can become especially uncomfortable as your cataracts worsen.

5. Lens Discoloration

A noticeable yellowish tint to your vision or a general dullness in once vibrant colors can also occur with cataracts development.

Ninety-eight percent of all cataract surgery procedures performed every year are completed without any major complications.
