Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is just one of the debilitating effects of diabetes. South Texas Eye Institute in San Antonio can treat diabetic retinopathy and try to preserve your vision.

About Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy begins by weakening the blood vessels in the retina. They become fragile, break, and leak fluid. Typically, the disease affects vision very little at this stage.

At later stages of diabetic retinopathy, however, new abnormal, weak blood vessels form. These new blood vessels can leak fluid into the center of the eye, which can cause vision to become hazy. In addition, inflammation can cause the formation of scar tissue, which may pull the retina away from the structure of the back of the eye. This can lead to blindness.

Treating Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy is a progressive condition and as a patient, you can help shape the course of your disease. Maintaining good blood sugar levels is key in prevention of Diabetic Retinopathy. Dr. Marten, with her background in nutrition, helps educate patients about lifestyle and food choices.

Importance of Routine Eye Exams for Diabetics

There are several treatment options to decrease the progression of Diabetic Retinopathy. Different Laser treatments can reduce swelling and bleeding. If these treatments are not enough, medications can be injected into the eye or surgery can be performed on the affected eye.
