LASIK Self-Test

Is LASIK Eye Surgery Right For Me?

The quick answer to this question is MAYBE. Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK. There are some factors or situations that may disqualify you from having LASIK eye surgery. For those patients who cannot safely have LASIK performed, the good news is they might be able to have a different surgical procedure with the same exceptional results.

Is LASIK eye surgery right for you? Let’s review a checklist to find out.

✔Are You Motivated?

It all begins here. Do you have the desire to improve your vision?

The ultimate goal of LASIK eye surgery is to give you the same vision you had while wearing glasses or contacts, or better. This is known as best corrected vision. LASIK will reduce or eliminate your need for lenses with a high rate of success and with few complications. It is an extremely safe and effective way to improve vision.
Although safe, there are still risks associated with any surgery, so are you motivated enough to balance the risks with the benefits?

✔Have You Had A LASIK Evaluation?

Once you are motivated enough to proceed, the next step is to have a thorough LASIK consultation with an experienced LASIK coordinator and surgeon. This is the only way to find out if LASIK eye surgery is truly right for you. Our doctors and staff will perform a series of tests and carefully review them with you.

A good LASIK candidate will:

✔Have Healthy Eyes

Not everyone is a candidate, so you must be free from certain eye diseases or anything that would interfere with your ability to heal. Any eye infections would need to be treated prior to surgery.

✔Have Adequate Corneal Thickness

The depth of your cornea will be measured, and if there is insufficient corneal tissue to perform LASIK, our doctors may recommend another surgical procedure like PRK or Visian ICL with equally excellent results.

✔Be the Right Age

Patients with nearsightedness must be at least 18 years old, and you must be 21 to correct farsightedness and astigmatism.

✔Have a Stable Prescription

Your prescription must have remained stable for at least one year before having LASIK.

✔Be in Generally Good Health

Some disqualifiers include:

  • Being pregnant or nursing
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Keratoconus
